Daddy/Daughter Kennebec Adventure

Sunday, August 11, 2013 by Northern Outdoors Trip Reviews

After 8 previous trips with Northern Outdoors with "the guys", we decided to change things up a bit and bring our daughters. So, on August 1, we drove up to the Forks with 5 of our 11-16 year olds for a new adventure.

Arrived at the lodge around 4:00 and while the girls did some campground sightseeing the dads hung out at the bar and indulged in a little blueberry. We unpacked, settled in, did a little swimming and came up for dinner in the restaurant, where we had a great night-before feast. We had a little more blueberry (for the dads) and went back to our fantastic cabin for the night. We got things ready for the next morning and hit the sack before 11:00.

6:00 came early on Friday morning and after a little extra nudging the girls were out of bed, packed the car and went up for the breakfast buffet before our Kennebec adventure. Aside from having sleep in their eyes, they did seem a little anxious/nervous but after a good breakfast and a bumpy ride to the dam, they loosened up a bit...until they saw the trek down the stairs, with the raft and the river below :) I failed to mentioned that it had been pouring since the night before and we we all soaked even before we hit the river. So, the chill had set in.

One of the things I have done over the years is to request a guide when I book and have been very fortunate to have someone I had requested. This time we asked for Dawn as I know she is a darn good guide and have seen her interact with her guests. I thought it would be great for our girls to be lead by a strong, confident female guide. She did not let us down. She showed up and introduced herself and looked at the girls who looked like wet, cold drowned rats already. She then pulled out a dry-bag and introduced a few of them to some wool leggings, gloves and hats for those interested. All of a sudden, their faces brightened and they were ready to go... so much for the "dads" knowing what specific clothing would be good for them. We tried and Dawn helped us succeed.

Needless to say, our raft of 8 was filled with loud shrieks of fear and excitement on the first few hits, but as soon as we hit Big Mamma and a few girls went tumbling around the raft, they were awakened, if not already, for the rest of the day. In fact, their confidence grew to a such a high level that moved most of them to the front of the raft and taking the remainder of the hits, including Magic Falls from the front, while the dads "paddled" hard from the back. This confidense was awesome to see and Dawn is a HUGE reason for this change due to her great personality, coaching and leading abilities. In fact, we realized very soon, we should just sit back (paddle harder than normal :)) and let Dawn do her thing with the girls. By the time the gorge area was complete the girls were ready to "be dumped". We had a little swim through the smaller rapids, fooled around on the "duckies" and ended the trip with the sun coming out and drying us up before he headed back to the lodge for lunch.

All in all, another fantastic trip (this makes 9 now). The girls have a new found respect for the trip the dads go on annually and want to go and do them now too. Onto the Dead in 2014 for the girls and the dads will hit the Kennebec Turbine Test again - maybe this time we wont flip on Maytag :)

Thanks again to the reservation staff, restaurant/bar staff, housekeeping and to our guide DAWN for a great trip. You have hooked another 5 guests and these girls will be back again!!!

Father / Daughter Rafting in Maine

Wednesday, July 24, 2013 by Northern Outdoors Trip Reviews

This past weekend 7 other friends and myself all came up to camp and go white water rafter. We knew we were going to have fun, but the trip and experience far exceeded every expectation we had! The brewery and pool was a great way to spend our Saturday and get ready for a day of rafting on Sunday. Our guide, Elliot was so friendly and knowledgeable (not to mention SO cute as well haha) and really made our experience memorable!

We rafted the Kennebec, and are already planning our next trip up there (to hopefully raft the Dead river).

GoPro Camera Survives Maine Winter In Kennebec River - Are You Its Owner?

Wednesday, June 12, 2013 by Northern Outdoors Staff

GoPro "Survivor Camera" needs to find its owner after spending a Maine winter at the bottom of the Class III-IV Kennebec River.

Northern Outdoors - GoPro Survivor Kennebec River CameraThe "World's Most Versatile CameraTM" just scored an epic credibility win in the eyes of Maine's rugged, professional whitewater rafting guides at Northern Outdoors. These guides use GoPros to shoot whitewater rafting video and stills on Maine's three most popular whitewater rivers, the Kennebec, the Dead, and the Penobscot. They know the cameras work, (and they work 'em hard) but the GoPro HD Hero 960 camera that was pulled out of the river just this week got their "stand-up and salute" kind of attention.

THE FIND: June 2013

Guests from Three Rivers Rafting hanging out along Maine's Kennebec River this week at a popular midway point found a GoPro camera case stuck in the mud and pulled it out. They gave it to their bus driver, thinking someone must have recently lost it.

Northern Outdoors - GoPro Survivor CameraThe driver took it back, opened it up, and plopped the disk in a computer to see what was on it. The pictures and video were all there, fully functional! He recognized the raft was a Northern Outdoors raft, and delivered the camera to us so we could try to track down the owner. Kudos and thanks to this fellow!

Someone out there is going to be one happy owner - maybe in a matter of cyber-days from posting this initial story...

The images on the camera revealed that the guide was Dawn Knowles, one of our long-time, year-round guides here at Northern Outdoors. She recalled that it was a late spring 2012 rafting trip of 6 fellows (might have been a bachelor party group). The camera was lost in Swimmer's Rapid, nearly a mile from where it was pulled out of the river. (For any Sherlockian sleuths or doubting Thomases out there, our video boater and another long-time year-round guide, Nick Atwood, points out that the foliage seen in the camera pictures is in full foliage, and so far this spring the leaves are still leafing out.)

THE PEOPLEAre You My Owner?

We have your "GoPro Winter River Survivor" camera! We also have all of the images/video intact. Call us at 207.663.4466 or email us:, provide identification as the owner, and we’ll send the camera back to you.

Best girls weekend ever!

Wednesday, June 12, 2013 by Northern Outdoors Trip Reviews

We had been looking forward to our rafting trip with Northern Outdoors for months, and we weren't about to let the rain deter us from having a great weekend. Half of our group arrived around 11 pm and the other half around 1:30 am - it was DOWN POURING. Dave was SUPER helpful and accommodating to us damsels in distress. He gave us a great deal on a cabin instead of having to pitch our tent in the dead of night, in a rain storm, which he did not have to do - THANKS DAVE!

The rafting trip the next day was a blast. Alex was our guide and was wonderful! He was charismatic and engaging, and most of all, thorough on rafting safety and guiding us through each rapid. It was rainy most of the trip, but we didn't even notice because we were having so much fun (also thank youuuu wet suits). Thanks Alex!!

We stayed at the campground that night as well in the same cabin, and had a great time grilling and enjoying our girl time together.

We would all definitely recommend Northern Outdoors on the Penobscot River to anyone, and we plan on coming back next year!

Great time on the river!

Monday, June 10, 2013 by Northern Outdoors Trip Reviews

We have been coming here during the winter months to celebrate New Years & snowmobile for a few years. This was my first time during the spring/summer and it was everything I expected and more!

As always the cabins were spacious & clean! The rafting was amazing as well! We had a great day out on the river and our guide Toby was awesome! He made out trip and was lots of fun when we hit the rapids!

As always great beer & food up at the Brew pub! Mudslides in the hot tub was a perfect way to relax after rafting & awesome lunch cooked and served by our guides!

I think we will have a new tradition of visiting in the winter and the summer from now on!

Thanks for a great weekend!!!

Awesome Trip

Monday, June 3, 2013 by Northern Outdoors Trip Reviews

The trek up from Little Rhody was well worth while. It was my first trip rafting and had a great experience, despite the rain and unseasonably cold air. Two things stood out to me most. One, Dawn was the tour leader and our rafting guide and she was outstanding. Not only did she serve us all drinks the night before... but once we were on the water, she was serious when she needed to be serious and fun when she needed to be fun. She struck a great balance and fostered a great adventure for all of us.

Also, I was most impressed by the incredible teamwork of the entire Northern Outdoors staff. Between bartending & waiting tables, leading the rafting trips, organizing the wetsuits and gear, cooking lunch, and likely a myriad other tasks that I didn't even see.

A+ on all fronts! I will certainly recommend Northern Outdoors to anyone looking for outdoor adventure in New England!

Awesome Weekend Getaway

Monday, June 3, 2013 by Northern Outdoors Trip Reviews

When the best man in my high school friends wedding invited me to come to the stag party, I though "Eh, should be fun" Then I found out where and what we were doing... and I got super excited, since white water rafting was something I always wanted to do.

The folks at Northern Outdoors blew me away! The Lynx cabin was way beyond anything I had imagined, and the brewery on site served up some of the best craft beers I've had in quite some time. Then we got to the rafting portion of the trip and with all the rain we had that weekend I thought for sure the trip would scrubbed due to flooding in areas around us, but no we hit some of the fastest and biggest stuff the Dead river had to offer with our guide Victor (who looked like a kid in a candy shop back there steering on one quick glance back)

All in all, it was an excellent trip and I will definitely be making the trip back up to do the other 2 rivers they have to offer at some point. If you get the chance, dive right and go! These folks will make more than worth your while!

Dead River Bachelor Party Weekend

Friday, May 31, 2013 by Northern Outdoors Trip Reviews

This was my 8th trip with Northern Outdoors. I have to say it was my favorite. I brought several newbies with me to go rafting on the dead. They were all a bit nervous because of the high cfs that weekend, needless to say you now have more rafting junkies for years to come. We're already planning our next trip in Sept for a high water run.

As always your staff out did themselves, their positive attitudes and their eager to please nature makes every trip perfect. The food, lodging and BEER always exceeds my expectations.

Thanks for the wonderful memories this past weekend. We will see you soon to create many new ones and meet some of the best people around.

Thanks again,

Memorial Day Dead River Rafting

Awesome trip!

Thursday, May 23, 2013 by Northern Outdoors Trip Reviews

We had an overall great experience with Northern Outdoors. The front desk staff was super friendly and helpful. Our raft guide on the dead river was Dawn and she was AWESOME. She made the experience so much fun and eased my nerves before the trip. We stayed in the pike pole cabin and have no complaints other than the bugs. But that's sort of an expectation in this sort of setting.

I heard that TVs were going to be put in all the rooms soon but that was probably one of my favorite things about the lodging. No phone service, Internet and TV for the weekend made for an even better weekend away.

We did try the wifi in the main lodge but it didn't work very well. The pub was also great for breakfast lunch and dinner- great servers and great food. I tried a few of the beers and they were all good. I would recommend Northern Outdoors to anybody and would love to come back in the future for a different adventure.

Spring Dead River Release

Thursday, May 23, 2013 by Northern Outdoors Trip Reviews

Our crew of 6 and sometimes 8 have rafted all of the rivers that NO guides in Maine, a few times each, so we were excited to hit the Dead for an early, cold, high-water release.

We arrived early Friday afternoon, moved into our cabin and immediately went up to the lodge for some Big Mamma Blueberries. After a few canning jars later, we had dinner, more Blueberries and hung around until we hit the sack.

Spent the day on Saturday rafting the Dead at 7000cfs and had a blast. The Dead is always good because of the continuous whitewater. Needless to say, not a lot of dead water to paddle through. We also braved the elements in a Diablo - definitely worth it and would do it again. To be honest, we were a little bummed that the high-water didn't seem to add any intensity to the hits as we had done a few times before at 6000cfs, but we had a great time nonetheless. Luke was awesome again as our guide and got us into some surfing and perfect lines during the trip. Great guy and guide.

We ended the trip with a nice lunch, watched the video and headed home to spend time with our wives for the rest of Mother's Day wknd.

Overall, great 36 hours were spent with NO again. Cabin was nice, rafting was great and all of the guides and support staff were awesome. Can't wait to head back for a little daddy / daughter trip on the Kennebec later this year.

Spring Dead River Rafting

Dead River Rafting

Friday, May 17, 2013 by Northern Outdoors Trip Reviews

I've been up to Millinocket with Northern Outdoors a couple of times.

The last time I did the Dead it we used a different company, it was my first time rafting and it wasn't quite the experience I'd hoped it would be. I went back to the Dead with Northern Outdoors and was extremely pleased with the whole experience.

The river was a blast, the guides (some I remember from my Penobscot trips) are outgoing, patient and extremely helpful. The brew pub with foosball, a pool table and the most delicious porter going is quite a bonus during a camping excursion.

I'll be back later in the season to run down the Kennebec, see you soon.

Fantastic Experience

Thursday, May 9, 2013 by Northern Outdoors Trip Reviews

We drove about 5 hours up with a total of 10 guys for my brother’s bachelor party and it was absolutely worth it.

The staff is friendly and incredibly helpful, the food is great, the beer is flawless, and the lodging (Timberdoodle) was clean, and more than adequate. Two people deserve to be recognized for outstanding service- Dawn and Emily. Dawn went out of her way to accommodate our mistaken reservation and even brought in another rafting guide to help us (again, it was our mistake). In addition, she was humorous, and a good sport and was able to handle some of the less than tactful guys in our group after they had a number of cocktails.

Our rafting guide, Emily, was equally confident and knowledgeable on the river. She kept us entertained and laughing down the many miles of the Dead River.

I would absolutely recommend Northern Outdoors for a bachelor party, or to anyone who is looking for an active getaway serviced by a professional, entertaining group of people.

Northern Outdoors Launches New Mobile-Friendly Maine Deer Hunting & Fishing Site

Wednesday, April 3, 2013 by Northern Outdoors Staff

Maine Deer Hunting & Fishing - Northern OutdoorsNorthern Outdoors recently launched an all new, mobile-friendly website showcasing our expanded Maine hunting and fishing trip offerings. The first website was - well, the very first website ever for our hunting trips. It stayed that way for a few more years than we care to admit! So, you can imagine how nice it is to have a brand spanking new, mobile-friendly website that works on any device you care to use, from smart phones to tablets to laptops, notebooks, and desktops! Ok, on to the real info - about the kinds of hunting and fishing trips Northern Outdoors offers.

Hunting is a time-honored tradition in Maine's North Woods, and Northern Outdoors has become Maine's #1 Hunting Outfitter & Lodge over the four decades of our operations. Beginning in 1976, Northern offered fall deer hunts for Maine's renowned trophy whitetail deer, and expanded into fishing soon thereafter. In fact, the inventor of the famous Banjo Minnow is none other than Wayne Hockmeyer, co-founder of Northern Outdoors.

In fact, not many of our rafting and snowmobiling guests may actually know that Northern Outdoors is one of the top ten trophy whitetail deer hunting outfitters in all of North America. With traditions like these,we are indeed pleased to showcase an expanded commitment to hunting and fishing through our newly launched, mobile-friendly website at In addition to Trophy Buck Hunting, are also excited to introduce custom bird & small game hunts and moose hunting in 2013. The new website features information on all Maine’s hunting seasons: Whitetail Deer, Moose, Bird and Small Game, as well as information on Bass, Trout, & Landlocked Salmon fishing seasons. All-inclusive professional Guided Deer Hunting packages start at $1050 for a week, $600 for 3 day Deer Hunts. Upland Bird Hunts start at $400 for a full day for 1-2 hunters.

"Northern Outdoors has a tradition of serving serious trophy whitetail deer hunters for almost 40 years. Our Maine Master Guides, full-service hunting lodge, and tremendous location in western Maine, home to Maine’s famous trophy bucks, cause hunters to return year after year to hunt with us." - says Russell Walters, President, Northern Outdoors.

We have also expanded our offerings for both serious and novice anglers by partnering with local guide service Kennebec River Anglers to offer first class bass fishing and fly fishing trips. These trips include Professional Registered Maine Guides, all gear, transportation, and more. They start at $179pp for half day trips and $350-$400 for full day trips. Anglers choose between fishing for Maine’s famous fighter - the smallmouth bass, or spectacular fly fishing for trout and landlocked salmon in western Maine’s rugged Kennebec and Dead Rivers.

Read the full press release here, about our new website and expanded hunting and fishing trips.

Also, visit our new website at to see for yourself what kinds of hunting and fishing you can do in western Maine.

Awesome trip !

Monday, November 5, 2012 by Northern Outdoors Trip Reviews
My husband and I have rafted with you a few times many many years ago and finally brought the two boys ages 16 & 18 for their first experience. We all had a great time! The big release on the Dead was awesome. Erika was very friendly and nice and I also wanted to comment on James about how funny and entertaining he was while informing us about the trip ahead of time. It shows that he truly loves his job! He even took it upon himself to tell a funny story while we were all waiting patiently for the pumpkin to blow up during the technical difficulties. You all have a great business going on up there and we do plan to come back for some awesome snowmobiling this winter!! The lodge is beautiful. We loved tenting out right near the river. The only recommendation we have is to maybe have the guide ask everyone if anyone wants to switch positions in the raft part way through to maybe give others a chance to sit in front if they want. We could have spoken up and asked at the time but just didn't and thought maybe the guide could suggest it instead. So thanks for a great experience and I definitely will recommend others to go in the future !

Dead river weekend

Monday, November 5, 2012 by Northern Outdoors Trip Reviews

Absolutely fantastic, the whole shebang: river trip, hospitality, lodging, food, staff, atmosphere ... far exceeded my already high expectations. The cabin was pristine and tranquil, the food was amazing, and the beer of course was freshly brewed and deluxe.

I think I was most impressed with was the staff. Not the usual high-school-maturity multitasked river guide/hash slinging/bus driving burnouts, but a group of enthusiastic, engaging, smart and committed young (and not so young) adults who clearly love what they do.

Added bonus: giant pumpkin end-of-season explosion!

Can't wait to get back.
